What do you say to a fallen soldier's girlfriend?

My friend's longtime boyfriend was killed in Iraq and the funeral is this weekend. I wanted to write a note of condolence to let her know I'm here for her but I'm looking for something more personal than "I'm sorry for your loss" and less cliche than "Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" Can anyone offer words that might help convey my sympathy?
