Why is the NRA a right winged organization?

I'm a liberal, and i would join the NRA if they were not a right winged organization. I am all for gun rights and own about 15 guns and enough bullets to last the army all year. I don't use weapons to hunt or defend myself though! I only have them in case this becomes a police state, then i will use my right as a citizen to take my government back! If you know what i mean! That means give um more shells than an Italian dinner!
