Is christianity a religion of peace?

The Old and New Testaments undoubtedly represented the best wisdom of their respective days. I think all but the most extreme fundamentalists of any God fearing religion would agree that certain pages in their respective books should not be taken word-for-word in modern society. The Torrah, Bible and Qur'an all command stoning. Where does that fit in our society?
