If my boyfriend and I ATTEMPTED TO HAVE , could I still be infected with HIV or syphilis?

My boyfriend and I were trying to have .. Half of the time it was WITH a condom, but the other half he was just trying to make it a little bit more comfortable and pleasurable for the both of us , so he took it off. Since he wasn't INSIDE of me, could I still have something ?
